Plot. Tom Holvak, a small town minister in Bensfield, Tennessee, struggles to keep his family afloat and maintain his congregation's faith during the Great Depression.
Reverend Tom Holvak (Glenn Ford) and his family – wife Elizabeth (Julie Harris), teenage son Ramey (Lance Kerwin) and young daughter Julie Mae (Elizabeth Cheshire) – battled to survive the Depression in the Deep South, sometimes with their love for each other as their only defence.
The Holvak family continue to house the escaped convict Craw. But Reverend Tom's faith is tested and young Ramey faces a choice between a friendship and his family.
