Hafeez and Chris started as actual roommates, but lost their shared home due to Hurricane Harvey. Hafeez later moved next door to Chris. Both of them are Christian.
The podcast was started in January 2017, by Hafeez Baoku, Khalil Trent, Sam Todo, Emmanuel Paris and Christopher Below, all roommates in Houston, Texas. By August 2017, they had around 3,000 listeners per month.
Hafeez had recently moved to Texas from Atlanta, Georgia, and "knew people in the creative space." He had always wanted to do a podcast. He wanted someone who shared his social and spiritual convictions. The roommates had two-to-three-hour late-night conversations, which inspired the podcast.
Hafeez asked one of his friends "if he knew anyone who does podcasts." After three or four episodes recording in their house, they moved into a studio.
The channel was part of the U.S. #YouTubeBlackVoices Creator Class of 2021.
