In the later part of his life he returned to Austria and worked on restoring medieval castles.

Seine Ausbildung zum Architekten erhielt er in Wien und München, unter anderem war er Schüler Friedrich von Schmidts und widmete sich als solcher mit besonderem Interesse der mittelalterlichen Architektur. Als Hofarchitekt Kaiser Maximilians hielt er sich in den Jahren 1864 bis 1867 in Mexiko auf.
