The investigation leads them to suspect Katrina’s son-in-law, but they eventually discover that the killer was the dog walker, who was blackmailing Katrina.
The clue Monk needed to solve Trudy's murder was the final gift she left for him, which has been sitting on his bookshelf at home for years. The source of the poison that is slowly killing Monk throughout the episode turns out to be his frequently-used personal sanitation wipes, which he carries everywhere.
