Durham (/ ˈ d ʌr əm / ⓘ DURR-əm, locally / ˈ d ɜːr əm / listen ⓘ) [a] is a cathedral city and civil parish in the county of Durham, England. It is the county town and contains the headquarters of Durham County Council , the unitary authority which governs the district of County Durham .

- Durham Cathedral. One of many things that makes Durham Cathedral so beguiling is that a lot of the architecture was completed in one phase of construction across the turn of the 12th century.
- Treasures of St Cuthbert. The cathedral recently launched the Open Treasures exhibition, which grants the public access to claustral buildings to view a world-class collection of religious artefacts.
- Durham Castle. On the promontory near the head of the peninsula stands Durham Castle, also included in Durham’s UNESCO site. This monument was built as a motte-and-bailey castle in the 11th century during the Norman Conquest to keep this unruly region of England in check and act as a defence against the Scots.
- Crook Hall and Gardens. In Durham’s Framwelgate area is a gorgeous manor house, the oldest parts of which go right back to the 1300s. Thanks to two major extensions over the years, Crook Hall is a living timeline of noble architecture, all in a line from the Medieval Hall to the Jacobean and then Georgian extensions.
