  6. May 15, 2023 · In 1848, the church received its current name of Notre Dame (Our Lady) as a tribute to the patron saint of Luxembourg. Prior to this, it was dedicated to Saint Peter. But it wasn’t until 1870, when Luxembourg was granted the title of bishopric (diocese), that Pope Pius IX elevated the former church to the status of cathedral.
