The region in which Sighnaq was situated was called Farab, it was located between Isfijab and Jand. The name means 'place of refuge', a name that is found also in other regions, especially in Transcaucasia. According to Hathon, Sighnaq was located in the Karatau Mountains, from where the river Kara Ichuk, a tributary of Syr Darya, emanates.

The Kimek confederation, probably spearheaded by the Kipchaks, moved into Oghuz lands, and Sighnaq in Syr Darya became the Kipchak urban centre. Kipchak remnants remained in Siberia , while others pushed westwards in the Qun migration. 
Timur personally attacked Urus in 1376 but the campaign ended indecisively. Urus died the next year and was succeeded by his son, Timur-Melik, who immediately lost Sighnaq to Tokhtamysh. Janibek Khan (Kazakh: Жәнібек хан, Jänıbek han, جٵنٸبەك حان ) was a co-founder and the second Khan of Kazakh Khanate from 1473-1480. He was a son of Barak, Khan of the Golden Horde from 1422 to 1427. Barak Khan's father was Koirichak, grandson of Urus Khan who was also a direct descendant of Genghis Khan.

Urus Khan was a descendant of Jochi. His ancestor Tuka-Timur was one of the youngest sons of Jochi. In 1260, during the turmoil in the Jochi ulus, he printed coins on his behalf in Crimea. Later, his son Uran-Timur and grandson Achik were the rulers of Crimea. The early years of Urus Khan are not recorded in the sources.
