From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Spectra Shield is a composite material (specifically, an ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber) used in bulletproof vests and vehicle armour. It is manufactured by Honeywell. Other popular fibers with similar uses are aramid (Kevlar or Twaron) and Dyneema (another UHMWPE).

Spectra Shield Fiber or fibre is a natural or synthetic substance that is significantly longer than it is wide. Fibers are often used in the manufacture of other materials. The strongest engineering materials often incorporate fibers, for example carbon fiber and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene.

SAPI and ESAPI are the most technically advanced body armor fielded by the U.S. military, and are constructed of boron carbide ceramic with a Spectra shield backing that breaks down projectiles and halts their momentum.
Dyneema and Spectra are brands of lightweight high-strength oriented-strand gels spun through a spinneret. They have yield strengths as high as 2.4 GPa (2.4 kN/mm 2 or 350,000 psi) and density as low as 0.97 g/cm 3 (for Dyneema SK75).

Any opinions on these materials? I bought a kevlar concealable 3a vest a while back and Spectra Shield was an option. It was lighter and thinner, but more money. Now I'm thinking about BALCS panels, and maybe Spectra Shield is the way to go to save weight vs. kevlar? Any thoughts out there? New(er) material options?
