I think a case can be made that stuff like Hatebreed, Terror, Madball, Throwdown, etc IS more hardcore influenced than your average bear as far as metalcore goes, so maybe there’s a useful distinction there? But I think historically, a lot of genre gatekeeping has more to do with the nascent mixing of distinct cultures than anything musical.
