The Catholic Reformation was a reform movement that took place within the Roman Catholic Church during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The movement is also known as the Counter Reformation , but many historians prefer not to use this term because it suggests that changes within the church were simply a reaction to Protestantism.
Even in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, during the age of confessional conflicts when the Catholic church and different Protestant churches in Europe fought for the hearts and minds of the people, histories of the Reformation were already written and conflicting interpretations offered.

Thus, it should be called the Counter-Reformation . Others proclaim that the calls for reform came from within the Church, and Luther and his successors had nothing to do with it.
