The Greek word for the spirit, pneuma, translates roughly to breath; it is the living essence that connects the body, heart, and mind, and will return to God when a Christian dies. The spirit is that which is eternal in a person.
God transforms you from within so that you become more like Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the presence of God in the life of a believer. But this does not mean God separates Himself into three separate parts. God is three distinct persons who somehow are one in substance.
