In a time of political strife and economic weakness, Württemberg’s King Wilhelm I and his wife Katharina laid the foundations for what today has become known as the Cannstatter Volksfest by forming the “Centralstelle des landwirtschaftlichen Vereins” – an agricultural organisation – in 1817.
Cannstatter Volksfest, also known as the Stuttgart Beer Festival, is the world’s second-biggest beer festival after Oktoberfest with over 4 million people visiting each year. It is locally referred to as Wasen because that’s the name of the fairgrounds where it takes place.
The Cannstatter Wasen is a 35-hectare area on the banks of the Neckar River and each year it plays host to the three-week Cannstatter Wasen beer festival, which usually starts around a week after Oktoberfest in late September/early October.
