One comes from the Saxon Prince-Elector, Frederick the Wise, who opened Leucorea University in Wittenberg in 1502, where important scholars such as the reformers Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon taught.
When Hitler came to power in 1933, the school was renamed the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg. During the postwar period, the university was much influenced by the Soviet education system.
