AFI Conservatory is a five-term Master of Fine Arts program in six disciplines: Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Producing, Production Design, and Screenwriting. Traditionally, the Conservatory accepts 28 Fellows per year for most disciplines and 14 for the Production Design and Editing disciplines.
HISTORY. AFI grew from the seeds planted in the White House Rose Garden by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The American Film Institute was founded in 1967 as a national arts organization to train world-class filmmakers and preserve America’s film heritage.

Today, the Conservatory offers a two-year MFA degree in six filmmaking disciplines: Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Producing, Production Design and Screenwriting.
AFI is based on a Conservatory model which focuses the educational experience in 6 disciplines while maintaining a hands-on production environment. Filmmakers come to AFI because you are guaranteed to make movies and to master the art of storytelling.
