Yes, Coptic Christians are persecuted in Egypt, but usually most Egyptian Christians and Muslims get along just like in Syria (Damascus) nonetheless hostility can be seen in rural area such as Minya where many Copts were killed and bomb. Consequently, in the big cities such as Cairo and Alexandria it becomes less prominent because people are much more open and secularized.

From the ninth century onwards the Copts were persecuted by their Muslim rulers, in turn Arab, Circassian and Ottoman. Churches were destroyed, books burnt and elders imprisoned. By the time the British had taken Egypt in 1882, Copts had been reduced to one-tenth of the population, mainly as a result of centuries of conversion to Islam.
From the Muslim conquest of Egypt onwards, the Coptic Christians were persecuted by different Muslim regimes, such as the Umayyad Caliphate, Abbasid Caliphate, Fatimid Caliphate, Mamluk Sultanate, and Ottoman Empire; the persecution of Coptic Christians included closing and demolishing churches, forced conversion to Islam, and heavy taxes for those who refused to convert.
