She is a two-time Oscar winner for 12 Years a Slave and Moonlight. Her films Selma, The Tree of Life, The Big Short, and Vice were additionally nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Gardner was born on October 16, 1967 in Winnetka, Illinois to parents Dorothy and John Gardner. Her father is a partner in William Blair & Company, the Chicago investment bank, and her mother is the president of the Michael Reese Health Trust, a nonprofit foundation in Chicago. Gardner graduated cum laude from Columbia Universitywith a degree in English.
Gardner always had an interest in movies as a child, so while she was attending Columbia, she started working on a student film doing locations. She continued doing location management and working in the art department for awhile and then decided that she wanted to learn more about where movies came from. She began working with a small agency, absorbing the theater world, and then worked at William Morris to learn about the book world, before making the move to Los Angeles. Sometime after, Brad Pitt began looking for someone to run his company, Plan B Entertainment. Gardner embarked on a series of interviews, which landed her the job as president. On September 9, 2000, she became married on Martha's Vineyard to Jonathan Boris Berg, the owner of Berg-Saccani Entertainment, a film production company in Los Angeles. The Reverend, Dr. Frank M. McClain, an Episcopal priest, performed the ceremony at the Old Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury, Massachusetts. Mr. Berg graduated from the University of Wisconsin, and is the son of Dr. Monika K. Berg and Dr. Jack F. Berg of Lexington, Massachusetts. His mother is a dermatologist in Framingham, Mass. Plan B Entertainment, Inc., more commonly known as Plan B, is an American production company founded in November in 2001 by Brad Grey, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston.In 2005, after Pitt and Aniston divorced, Grey became the CEO of Paramount Pictures and Pitt became the sole owner of the company.
Pretty/Handsome is a 2008 television production by Ryan Murphy that was not picked up by FX. According to Vogue, Murphy "was devastated when the studio he was working with decided not to pursue the show because they felt their advertisers wouldn’t support it".
