Gibraltar (previously known as the Hugh Rodney Sharp Mansion), located at 2505 Pennsylvania Avenue in Wilmington, Delaware, is a country estate home dating from c. 1844 that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It takes its name from the Rock of Gibraltar, alluding to the high rocky outcrop on which the house was built.

Dec 25, 2012 · Gibraltar, the sole surviving walled estate in the city of Wilmington, is still standing like a rock, thanks to its framework of steel girders and walls that are 30 inches thick. No one has lived in the storied mansion since 1991.

With its rich history, exquisite gardens, and association with an important Delaware family as well as a nationally renowned landscape architect, Gibraltar was a perfect candidate for restoration. In 1995, Preservation Delaware began working with the Sharp family while beginning the search for funds to acquire the property.

If you ever find yourself looking for a quiet place to reflect in Wilmington, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better setting than Marian Coffin Gardens. Lavishly sprawling on the grounds of the now empty Gibraltar estate, the gardens are soul cleansing to behold.
