If you want to hike Mt. Whitney, you should know that the Mt. Whitney trail is extremely difficult, especially if you try to do it in just one day (as many do). It is located 6.0 miles from the trailhead and resides at 12,000 feet of elevation. Most overnighters use this camp as the stopping point before going on to the summit in the morning.
It is 2.2 miles from Trail Camp to Trail Crest, and then another 2.8 miles from Trail Crest to the Summit. But these are the toughest miles that you will have to travel along, because all your travels will be above 12,000 feet and the oxygen is getting a bit thin at this point, and at 14,000 feet you will have a third less oxygen to breath.
That the ascent up the standard Mt. Whitney Portal Route (~6,700′ with ups and downs, 21.4 miles round-trip) is non-technical, on a nice summer day at least, adds to the draw. When you throw in the incredible views and a whole lot of bragging rights, it’s really no surprise that hiking Mount Whitney is popular — real popular.

Besides the 99 switchbacks, most of the trail is a gradual increase and even descends in certain areas. The Mountaineers Route is steep, direct, and doesn’t require many unnecessary maneuvers.
