Sep 4, 2020 · Graphic novels are longer than comic books. Graphic novels cover a wide array of genres and subject matters. Comic books may as well, but the subjects are often associated with or explained through the lens of superheroes or heightened realities.
- Genres and demographics. Before scripting a graphic novel, a writer must consider the genres they’re writing in and the age group they’re writing for.
- Structure & Storytelling. Once a writer chooses a genre to write in, they have to outline the story like any other book. Clear structure is even more important in comics and manga, especially if the stories are being serialized.
- Format. Formatting your graphic novel story is similar to formatting a screenplay. A writer has to break down the story onto the scripted page, not only scene by scene, but also panel by panel.
- Page and panel layout considerations. When writing graphic novels, you’re writing for the visual language. The visual symbols chosen in each story hold archetypal meanings to the readers, such as snakes (Biblical reference) or characters’ powers in relation to mythological gods (like Thor or Zeus).
- Decide on Your Idea. Like every other work of fiction, a graphic novel starts with a story idea. Although the graphic novel is a form of visual storytelling, I would suggest that you don't focus so much on that aspect of it at the idea development stage.
- Decide on Your Illustration Style. Some graphic novelists do both the scriptwriting and the illustrations, but many do not. If you're an artist and you want to tackle the whole project yourself, you may already know the illustration style you want to use.
- Write Your First-Draft Script. Writing a graphic novel (or comic book) is not quite the same as writing a novel or short story. In fact, it's closer in many ways to writing a screenplay.
- Refine Your Script. Writing the first draft will help you think like a graphic novelist. It will get you in the habit of picturing the panel, how many characters will be in it, what kind of background it will have, and what dialogue (if any) will need to fit inside.
