Somewhat of a throwback to the swampy backwoods thrillers of the 70's, it has a deadbeat, moonshine soaked violent veneer of scum and sadness that packs a punch.

David M. Rosenthal's A Single Shot, starring Sam Rockwell, is a bleak, existential look at white trash-living, with a neo-noir tinge that beautifully thrives in some areas, and desperately falters in others.

Based on the 2011 crime suspense novel by Matthew F. Jones (who also adapted the screenplay), the story centers on John Moon (Rockwell), a penniless hunter living in a small rural town, whose life is changed forever when he mistakenly shoots and kills a young woman while deer hunting.

After concealing the girl's body, John discovers a nearby box full of money that he decides to keep and use to hire a lawyer (William H. Macy) to fight a divorce suit against his unforgiving wife Moira (Kelly Reilly).

Of course, with a dead girl and a pile of cash gone missing, there are bound to be some consequences, and that leads John to a group of drug-dealing criminals who seek bloody vengeance against him.

A Single Shot includes a robust performance from Sam Rockwell as a humble man down on his luck. The premise is instantly gripping and tense, but where it goes with it is a mishmash of daring, nihilistic direction and aimless plot. In the end, though, the film's main character prevails over the typical boilerplate.
