Dec 18, 2013 · Spike Jonze's "Her" plays like a kind of miracle the first time around. Watching its opening shots of Joaquin Phoenix making an unabashed declaration of eternal love to an unseen soul mate is immediately disarming. The actor is so unaffected, so sincere, so drained of the tortured eccentricity that's a hallmark of most of the roles that he plays.
I absolutely loved the premise of the story and how it developed. I think it is a movie that has for the most part, slipped by a lot of people, it is simply underrated. Sure, the story sounds laughable, but with the movie succeeding in drawing the viewer in, getting them to actually care - that is no joke. That is art.

This is one of the few recent movies that I would include among my all time favorite films. The science fiction aspect of Her is incredible. It feels so real and believable without making the future look like say, Blade Runner 2049. Joaquin Phoenix wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar, which is a travesty.

Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) is a very lonely and emotionally constricted man. He's getting a divorce and seems very isolated--even though he lives in a huge city.
