Overview. The Russian Revolution took place in 1917 , during the final phase of World War I. It removed Russia from the war and brought about the transformation of the Russian Empire into the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), replacing Russia’s traditional monarchy with the world’s first Communist state.
By this time, the power of the Bolsheviks had been established throughout the Volga region. On November 7–8, 1917, the Bolsheviks seized power in Narva, Revel, Yuryev, Pärnu, and in the following days – throughout the entire Baltic territory not occupied by the Germans.
There is also evidence that Germany funded the Bolshevik Party, though historians disagree over how much money they actually contributed. Lenin arrived in Petrograd on the evening of April 3 , 1917 .
