Bruges is located in the north-west of Belgium and has an area of 138.4 km². It is the capital of the province of West Flanders. The boroughs of Bruges are: Brugge, Koolkerke, Sint-Andries, Sint-Michiels, Assebroek, Sint-Kruis, Dudzele, Lissewege, Zeebrugge.
The city is located precisely where two landscapes meet, with the coastal plain on one side and the sandy soil of the higher ground further inland on the other. A sand ridge served as a natural barrier.
