Most camping on the Mt Whitney Trail takes place at either Outpost Camp, or Trail Camp. Outpost Camp is located 3.8 miles from the Whitney Portal trail-head and is a good stopping point if you want to sleep down a bit lower at 10,400 feet rather than proceeding up to Trail Camp at 12,000 feet.
At 6 miles from the trailhead and the highest possible place to camp, Trail Camp is considered the best site to acclimate to the altitude for overnight hikers. You’ll pass several lakes along the way, including Lone Pine Lake, Mirror Lake, and Consultation Lake.

Feb 27, 2024 · CAMPING ALONG THE MT. WHITNEY TRAIL. You have a few different options for camping when you’re backpacking Mount Whitney: Trail Camp, Outpost Camp, Consultation Lake, or Lone Pine Lake.
The most popular place to camp is Trail Camp (12000 feet), 6 miles up the trail. It’s pretty rocky and barren, and doesn’t offer much shelter from the elements. You can also camp at Consultation Lake (near Trail Camp), Outpost Camp (3.8 miles on the trail, 10400 feet), or Lone Pine Lake* (2.8 miles, 9900 feet).
The Mount Whitney Trail is a hiking trail that climbs Mount Whitney, the tallest peak in the contiguous United States. It starts at Whitney Portal, 13 miles (21 km) west of the town of Lone Pine, California. The hike is 21.4 mi (34.4 km) round trip, with an elevation gain of over 6,100 feet (1,860 m).
Nonetheless, there are two designated campsites along the Mt. Whitney Trail, which are Outpost Camp and Trail Camp. However, if you’ve secured an overnight permit for one night only, then on your first day, I recommend making your way to Trail Camp.
