Lane opened a hotel around 1852 near the settlement of Mile Lick and named it the Mile Lick Inn. In 1855, when the community was renamed West Baden in reference to Wiesbaden (or Baden-Baden ), a spa town in Germany that was known for its mineral springs, Lane changed the hotel's name to the West Baden Inn.

Oct 28, 2022 · Yet another physician, John A. Lane, purchased the 770 acres just north of the hotel in 1851, where he built the West Baden Springs Hotel, named after the famous German spa town “Wiesbaden” and rivaling its southern neighbor in grandeur.
The first hotel on the site of the present-day West Baden Springs Hotel was constructed in 1855. The frame structure was named the Mile Lick Hotel, although the owner changed it to the West Baden Springs Hotel shortly after it opened to suggest a connection to a famous German spa.
