It's pretty safe. The gang presence (Sotel) in the area has long been gentrified out, but there's still the odd homeless person around and they can be unpredictable. Like anywhere else in LA, don't be stupid, and look both ways before stepping off the curb. Afternoon traffic sucks hard.

Overall, the Sawtelle/West LA area is highly regarded as a desirable place to live, with a strong sense of community and many amenities and activities to enjoy.
In general, I would say it's a safe and slightly boring area. I think a decent number of UCLA students live in that area. Parking is an issue.
