Staryi Chortoryisk was site of a major battle between the Russian and German army in World War I. In both October 1915 and May 1919, there were major encounters between the two sides. Staryi Chortoryisk had a large Jewish population until World War I, when most of them fled to escape the fighting between the German and Russian army.
Staryi Chortoryisk (Ukrainian: Старий Чорторийськ, translit. Staryi Chortoryis'k, Polish: Czartorysk) is a village (selo) in north-western Ukraine. It is located on the bank of the Styr River in the Manevychi Raion (district) of the Volyn Oblast (province).

Anton Buteyko (6 April 1947, in Staryi Chortoryisk, Ukraine – 10 March 2019, in Kyiv) was a Ukrainian diplomat. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United States (1998-1999). Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Romania (2000-2003). People's Deputy of Ukraine (1994-1998).
Director was born in Staryi Chortoryisk, Volhynian Governorate, Russian Empire (now in Ukraine) on September 21, 1901. In 1913, he and his family immigrated to the United States, and settled in Portland, Oregon. In Portland, Director attended Lincoln High School where he edited the yearbook.
She is believed to have been born the last week of December, 1910; however, the birth records have been lost. She was born in Staryi Chortoryisk, in Ukraine, to the Director family, prominent Jewish residents. She was married to her frequent collaborator, Milton Friedman (1912–2006), who won the 1976 Nobel Prize in Economics.
