The city name of ‘Albany’ derives from the Duke of York’s Scottish title, the ‘Duke of Albany’. The name dates back to 1664 when the English took control of the area where Albany is now to be found. Before this period, Albany was known as Beverwyck (“beaver district”)on account of its lucrative position in the fur trade.
