The meaning of HOMINIDAE is a family of bipedal mammals of the order Primates comprising recent humans together with extinct ancestral and related forms and the gorilla, chimpanzee, bonobo, and orangutan.
The Hominini form a taxonomic tribe of the subfamily Homininae ("hominines"). Hominini includes the extant genera Homo and Pan (chimpanzees and bonobos) and in standard usage excludes the genus Gorilla (gorillas). The term was originally introduced by Camille Arambourg (1948).
