Buda (Hungarian pronunciation:) was the historic capital of the Kingdom of Hungary and, since 1873, has been the western part of the Hungarian capital Budapest, on the west bank of the Danube. Buda comprises a third of Budapest's total territory and is mostly wooded.
Medieval Origins: The story of Buda Castle begins in the 13th century when King Béla IV of Hungary commissioned a fortress to defend the western borders of his kingdom against Mongol invasions. Initially constructed as a stone fortress, it evolved over time to accommodate the needs of subsequent rulers.
A City Desired by All. During the 1400s and 1500s, Buda was transformed into a European cultural centre. Hungarian universities were founded in neighbouring Pecs in the late 1360s and Obuda roughly three decades later, the latter of which now forms a historical district of the city (Old Buda).
