Lili Ilse Elvenes (28 December 1882 – 13 September 1931), better known as Lili Elbe, was a Danish painter, transgender woman, and one of the earliest recipients of gender-affirming surgery (then called sex reassignment surgery).
But the true story of the Danish painter's marvellous transformation from Einar Wegener to Lili Elbe is far more enigmatic and mysterious than depicted in the film. Even Lili's own memoirs published after her death are also partially a twist of the truth.
