- The Battle of Pavia, fought on the morning of 24 February 1525, was the decisive engagement of the Italian War of 1521 –26 between the Kingdom of France and the Habsburg empire of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor as well as ruler of Spain, Austria, the Low Countries, and the Two Sicilies.

The French would make two further attempts to regain Lombardy before the end of the war, but neither would be successful; the terms of the Treaty of Madrid, which Francis was forced to sign after his defeat at the Battle of Pavia, would leave Italy in Imperial hands. Another effect of the battle was the changed attitude of the Swiss.
The battle was so important that it lead very soon to the creation of the Lancieri di Montebello regiment. On the 20th of May 1859 the Piedmontese light cavalry and French infantry fought at Montebello against the 5th Austrian army defeating it definitively.
