History [ edit] In 1877, a group of exiled Italian Jesuits established a small college in Las Vegas, New Mexico. [8] The Jesuits named this institution Las Vegas College which would ultimately become known as Regis University. [8]

The student newspaper, The Brown and Gold, announced a contest that October to choose “a name by which they may be known on the sporting pages and around which new yells will be built.”
