The Besançon Citadel is one of the most representative examples of these golden rules, still visible today. During construction of the fortress, Mont Saint-Étienne, on which the Citadelle is built, was transformed into a veritable stone quarry. The entire square was completed in 1684, 9 years after construction had begun.
