Jul 18, 2019 · Answer: The church of Christ or the church of God is not an organizational name of the Church, this is only a DESCRIPTIVE TERM of the Church. While the Holy, Catholic, Apostolic and Roman Church is not the official name of the Church, this is only a DEFINITION of the Church.
The term "catholic" simply means "universal," and when employing it in those early days, St. Ignatius of Antioch and St. Polycarp of Smyrna were referring to the Church that was already "everywhere," as distinguished from whatever sects, schisms or splinter groups might have grown up here and there, in opposition to the Catholic Church.
Sometimes the Latin Church is called Roman Catholic because a) its patriarch is the bishop of Rome, b) the predominant rite used in the Latin Church is the Roman Rite. All the others are in communion with Rome, but not directly under the pope’s leadership, having their own patriarch or other primate, and so are in no way “Roman”.
