William the Silent. (1533–84). The hero of the Dutch struggle against Spanish rule was William the Silent, one of the wealthiest noblemen in Europe. He was born on April 24, 1533, in Dillenburg, Nassau. As count of Nassau he held large estates in the Netherlands, and from a cousin he inherited the French principality of Orange.
