  1. Jan 28, 2016 · Is it OK to allow a temporary application of 12V (from battery bank via a switch) to the D+ terminal on an alternator, usually while the engine is NOT running, but also when it IS running (in case I forget to switch it off!).

  2. Mar 7, 2024 · This requires current through the warning light bulb into the D+ terminal to get charging going. Then there is a 6 diode machine, this does not require a warning lamp to be connected in order for it to work. It is not uncommon for the smaller engine alternator to be the latter type.

  3. Aug 23, 2010 · There are 3 terminals on the alternator labelled REG, POS and NEG. ( I gather these are equivalent to D+, B+ and B-) The alternator has an internal regulator, which has one wire connected to the REG terminal. The other is "floating". I assume it was removed from one (NEG?)of the terminals when the alternator was disconnected.

  4. Jan 5, 2008 · Although I can give you generic connections now (eg: the terminal marked B+ is the output, the terminal marked D+ goes to the charge light, the terminal marked W is the tacho connection) this presupposes your alternator uses the conventional markings.

  5. Mar 30, 2021 · Looking at the wiring diagram it looks like the yellow/black wire goes to the D+ terminal, which I assume is the one nearest the top of the photo. I did have the battery alarm sounding when I ran the engine after a few seconds, connecting the yellow/black wire to the top terminal seems to have stopped that.

  6. Jun 7, 2020 · The Lucas test card for 9 diode alternators says that to test at the D+ terminal you disconnect it and measure the voltage at end of the D+ cable with the ignition switch on - expect battery voltage. A quick and dirty test is to earth the D+ wire/terminal at the alternator end with the switch on and see if the waning lamp bulb lights.

  7. Mar 13, 2021 · The cable to the ignition warning light, which is the thin one, will go to D+ The cable to the tachometer, if fitted, will go to W, but it doesn't look like you have one of those. In addition, you will need to add a new cable of the same size as the B+, but black.
