The Brda River is a picturesque waterway that winds its way through the heart of Bydgoszcz. It is part of the Odra-Vistula waterway, which connects these two rivers via the Warta and Noteć Rivers and the Bydgoszcz Canal. The waterway is navigable for modest barges but with a limited draught.
Connecting the Brda to the Noteć River (German: Netze) just over 20km to the west, the canal meant that river-bound transport from Bydgoszcz could travel as far west as Berlin and Rotterdam! Thus, the economic boom of the early 19th century saw a huge increase in grain and timber exports.

Without question one of the best places to visit in Bydgoszcz, the riverfront here is home to some of the city’s most compelling landmarks. Take for instance the city’s iconic half-timbered granaries.
