Deep purple were among the pioneers of metal, and even though the term metal wasn't used the way we do today, they have retrospectively been acknowledged as an early metal act. They, along with Sabbath etc. were the first wave of heavy metal to Maiden, Saxon's etc. "new wave of british heavy metal".
