In the 1250s a monk at St. Alban’s abbey named Matthew Paris drew several maps of Britain, which he appended to various copies of his history of England. The official chronicler at one of the most important monasteries in the land, Paris was a well-connected man.

Jul 19, 2017 · We have discussed this map and the other maps drawn by Matthew Paris in the blogposts Our Favourite Map and Medieval Maps of the Holy Land. The Abbreviated Chronicle of England was left unfinished, possibly due to Matthew Paris’s death in May or June of 1259.
