1. Check Your Pipette Tips. This is one of the most common causes of leaking, and luckily the easiest fix! The seal between the plastic tip and the shaft of the pipette needs to be airtight to ensure accuracy and to hold liquid in the tip. If you notice dripping it could be due to improper tips.
If your pipette leaks with all liquids: Switch to manufacturer-recommended pipette tips. Clean the tip cone and piston of your pipette and check for wearing. Use correct technique for attaching tips. If the above actions do not resolve the issue, send your pipette for repair and maintenance.

- You Use an Air Displacement Pipette, Most Likely. An air displacement pipette works a bit like a syringe, except that there is an air-filled cushion between the piston and the sample.
- Don’t Use an Air Displacement Pipette (Depending on Your Application!) Most of the information in this article relates to air displacement pipettes but sometimes a positive displacement pipette may be a better option.
- Have Your Pipette Serviced Every 6–12 Months. This is a rough guide; you made need to have it serviced more often depending on your requirements for accuracy.
- Check Your Pipette for Damage Daily. Examine the nose of the barrel (where the tip is fitted) for any obvious damage. If there is a problem, have it serviced—because it is unlikely to be fit for the job.
Detergent or cleaning solution. Disassemble the lower part of your pipette. Fully immerse the contaminated parts* in an ultrasonic bath with a detergent or cleaning solution recommended for laboratory instruments. It is strongly recommended to rinse the pipette several times with water and dry it thoroughly.
