Feb 26, 2024 · Are you dating someone but don't know if you should get engaged? Learn how soon is too soon to propose, according to experts and study data.
- Choose Your Marriage Location. Where do you get a marriage license? Once you know in which municipality (city, district and county) your nuptials will take place, you'll need to locate where to obtain the license and learn whether they schedule walk-in visits or offer marriage license online applications.

- The one conversation to have immediately… While we don’t recommend starting to actively plan your wedding within seconds of being just engaged, we do think there’s one important conversation to have shortly after the ring is presented.
- If your wedding is more than 18 months away... Having a long engagement can be a major luxury. You'll be able to relax and take on wedding planning with a generally slow and leisurely pace, and with less stress.
- If your wedding is a year or more away... The average couple is engaged for 13 months, and we think that’s a great timeframe if you can make it work. We recommend waiting about three weeks before jumping into wedding planning.
- If your wedding is in less than a year... There are lots of reasons why a timeline of less than a year might be right for you and your partner. Perhaps you got engaged in December and always dreamed of a fall wedding, but don’t want to wait nearly two years to wed.
- You've Worked Through Hard Times Together. Life is not without ups and downs, so you'll know that you're ready for marriage if you've persevered through tough times together.
- You Can Agree to Disagree… You and your future spouse won't see eye-to-eye on everything, and that's okay. In fact, being able to (respectfully) challenge and learn from each other is a great quality to have.
- But You're Aligned on What Matters Most. It is important, however, to be aligned on the things that matter most. Topics like finances, kids, religion and careers are essential core values.
- You Don't Want Your Partner to Change. Before you get married, ask yourself if there are any fundamental characteristics you wish you could change about your partner.
