The history of Los Angeles began in 1781 when 44 settlers from central New Spain (modern Mexico) established a permanent settlement in what is now Downtown Los Angeles, as instructed by Spanish Governor of Las Californias, Felipe de Neve, and authorized by Viceroy Antonio María de Bucareli.
In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and became part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood.
The city grew slowly during the Spanish and Mexican periods, but began to develop more rapidly after California became a US state in 1850. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, LA became a major center for oil production and manufacturing, and its population exploded as people moved to the area for jobs.
