Airborne in the 1960s. Textron entered the aerospace industry in 1960 when it purchased the Bell Aircraft company. Bell was best known for its helicopters, but first gained wide recognition shortly after World War II when it built the XP-59 Airacomet, which was the first American jet aircraft.
