Mar 18, 2017 · Columbia Records derives its name origin from the District of Columbia. It was originally the Columbia Phonograph Company and distributed Edison phonographs and recorded cylinders throughout the Washington, D.C. area. In 1894 the company ended its ties with Edison and began selling its own manufactured recordings.
The recordings could not be released under the Columbia Records name because EMI operated a separate record label by that name, Columbia Graphophone Company, outside North America. This was the result of legal maneuvers which led to the creation of EMI in the early 1930s.
Not even half a year into the production of the LP, Columbia made its first label design change. “Long Playing” and “Microgroove” were now written in one line, with the LP symbol and the music note and Microphone centered at the bottom of the label. The patent and manufacturing information is also now in one line. 1952 - 1955

1938. In 1938 CBS acquired the American Recording Corporation, which later became Columbia Records. 1939. Columbia Phonograph Company of Canada did not survive the Great Depression, so CBS made a distribution deal with Sparton Records in 1939 to release Columbia records in Canada under the Columbia name.

Judging by gaps in their Victor recording histories (documented in Fagan and Moran, EDVR ), Myers seems to have been exclusive to Columbia for discs from about 1902 to 1905, and Stewart from late 1903 until the end of 1906.
