  5. They dredged the ponds and removed the swampy areas and created the island you see today. The park was named after the first president of the association, Alfred J. Crane. After completion of the work the park was donated to the Village of Monroe. It was here in 1937, during the dredging, that the complete skeleton of a Mastodon was unearthed.
