Pioneer is a constructed format that allows expansion sets and core sets from Return to Ravnica forward, save for the Pioneer ban list. It is legal for tabletop Magic: The Gathering and Magic Online. MTG Arena does not support Pioneer yet, but uses Explorer to bridge while the older cards are added.

Aug 15, 2024 · The Legal Sets. We can contrast Pioneer to Modern in the sense that the oldest set is the Eighth Edition from July 2003, over 20 years ago. That’s a huge card pool that not all players have access to. However, Pioneer's oldest set was Return to Ravnica, which was released in October 2012.
All sets legal in Pioneer are also legal in Modern, though the reverse is not true. There are also three cards ([[Deathrite Shaman]], [[Dig Through Time]], and [[Treasure Cruise]]) that are legal in Pioneer but not in Modern.
