Pope Pius XI. Pope Pius XI ( Italian: Pio XI ), born Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti [a] ( Italian: [amˈbrɔ:dʒo daˈmja:no aˈkille ˈratti]; 31 May 1857 – 10 February 1939), was the Bishop of Rome and supreme pontiff of the Catholic Church from 6 February 1922 to 10 February 1939.
Pope Pius XI. Pope Pius XI, birth name Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti, was the 259th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. His tenure as the head of the church began in February 1922 and ended with his death in February 1939. During this period, the Vatican became an independent city-state in 1929, which effectively made him its first sovereign.
When Pope Pius XI had died, in February 1939, workers started digging a new tomb in the sacred grottoes, the level beneath the main floor of the basilica. They uncovered the necropolis, finding both pagan and Christian mausoleums. Pope Pius XII gave permission to excavate the necropolis including the area under St. Peter’s high altar.
What might seem more than just a simple coincidence is that Our Lord said to St. Peter that he is the rock upon which He was to build His Church. When Pope Pius XI died (February 10, 1939), his successor Pope Pius XII ordered that a place be made available to put the body of his predecessor in the lower crypt area in the Vatican Basilica.
