Hundreds of Tenmangu shrines exist across Japan, each dedicated to the spirit of the learned scholar Michizane Sugawara. Among these, two reign supreme: Kyoto's Kitano Tenmangu and Fukuoka's Dazaifu Tenmangu, which is built above the grave of Michizane.

Dazaifu Tenmangu is a large Shinto shrine set in beautiful grounds in the historic town of Dazaifu, less than an hour from Fukuoka's city center. The shrine has on-site museums, teahouses, landscaped gardens and a program of art installations.
Aug 10, 2023 · Dazaifu Tenmangu (pronounced Dazaifu Tenmangū/Dazaifu Tenmanguu/太宰府天満宮) is the largest shrine in the island of Kyushu’s (九州) and like every other shrine, is known for its stunningly beautiful architecture. Despite its famed reputation, it also holds a tragic past in regards to its founding.
- Shop along Tenjinsama Street. Once you depart from Dazaifu Station, you’ll along the main Tenjinsama shopping street. The street has torii gates which leads you to the main Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine area.
- Visit Starbucks. One of the highlights of the Tenjinsama shopping street is seeing a unique Starbucks Store among the row of traditional shops. The architecture is a bit funky as there are over 2,000 wooden batons interwoven in the front of the store and inside the store on the ceiling and walls.
- Eat the fresh Umegae mochi. Umegae mochi (plum rice cakes) is a must-try snack on your Dazaifu day trip. It’s a glutinous rice cake that has sweet red bean filling and is grilled with a plum mark on the outside.
- Visit Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. If you’re a fan of visiting shrines, then you need to add Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine (太宰府天満宮) to the list. From the shopping street, you’ll cross over a bridge and a pond so it’s a nice area to get some nature.

In honor of Michizane’s lifelong affection for the blossoms, plums are the symbol of Dazaifu and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. The shrine precincts contain some 6,000 white and red plum trees of nearly 200 different species.
