Feb 18, 1997 · The response of our Lord comes by the book. To every temptation of Satan, He responds, “It is written.” He reverts to Scripture. He depends upon Scripture. He asserts the authority of Scripture. Our Lord Jesus’ love of the Word and His acknowledgment of its absolute authority is so clear in passages such as this.
Satan wanted our Lord to doubt God’s goodness and guidance, fearing that He might die if He trusted and obeyed the Father. Satan wanted the Lord to act independently of the Father, saving His life by making bread from stones. Jesus knew that true life came from trusting God’s Word; it came by faith. Satan takes his cue from our Lord’s words.
